Opened in 1918 Aldergrove did not become a an operational RAF station until 1925. During WW2 it was an important Coastal Command airbase for the Atlantic sea routes. In the 1950 it became a V bomber dispersal location and in 1968 a F-4 Phantom maintenance unit was based there. Today it is an important RAF/Army helicopter base.
