RAF Stations Index

Opened in the late 1930`s as a relief landing ground but with the outbreak of WW2 it became a training airfield with the RAF. In 1943 the airfield was closed until 1944 so that three runways could be laid. In 1944 the USAAF took over the base and a troop carrier unit moved in with their C-47`s. The station was handed back to the RAF in 1945 and was used for storage until 1948 when it was put into care. RAF Cranwell used Barkston as a satellite and continues to do so to the present day. In 1983 a Sqn of Bloodhound missiles were based here and from 2002 to 2004 the BBMF used Barkston while their home facilities were resurfaced.
