RAF Stations Index 

Opened in 1937 as a bomber station it was in December 1940 that the Spitfires of 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit moved into Benson and started ops that put the base into the forefront of the war effort. The Kings Flight moved in shortly after the war started and was based here for the next 40 years although being renamed the Queens flight after his death and moving to Northolt in 1995. Various fixed wing aircraft have been based here but it is now used mainly by Helicopter units in the RAF.
