RAF Station
Bentley Priory |
|
| Opened in 1926 for RAF use the building dates back to 1766. Made famous as the headquarters for Fighter Command during the war. Although little damage from enemy action was done the Priory came very close to destruction when a damaged Wellington bomber crashed next to the Sergeants mess. In 1944 two 300 yard airstips were built next to the bunker area so high ranking commanders could fly in for meetings. In 1968 it became HQ for Strike command and at present is home to the Defence Aviation Saftey Centre and plans are being made to close Bentley by 2008 and move to Northolt. | ||
