RAF Stations Index

Constructed in 1940 as a dummy airfield to fool the Luftwaffe RAF pilots began using the site as a relief landing ground in 1943. Later that year it became an operational base for training. In 1953 high powered radars were installed and it became a command and control centre for Fighter control. It is due for closure in 2012 however there are problems with funding and moving the facilities to Scampton so a review has been ordered. A SAR flight is also based here from 202 Sqn RAF.
