Opened as a bomber base in 1940 it continued in this role for the rest of the war. 617 Sqn were based here between 1943 and 1944. Coningsby was home to Canberra`s and Vulcan`s in the 50`s and 60`s the F-4 Phantom arrived in 1966 in the ground attack role. From 1974 this changed to Air Defence and the F-4`s were soon replaced by Tornado`s in 1984. Today the base is used by the Squadrons operating the new Typhoon aircraft. It is also home to the BBMF and Weapons Evaluation Unit.
