| Opened on 11th March 1938 as a training base but transferred to Bomber Command soon after. On 8th September 1943 the USAAF took over and three runways were laid down. Used as a troop carrier airbase until the end of the war when it was handed back to the RAF on the 1st July 1945. Cottesmore became a training base between 1954 and 1955 and Canberra`s moved in. Cottesmore hosted the Victor Bombers from 1957 - 1969. After a quiet few years it became the Tornado training unit in 1981. When the Tornado unit closed in 1999 they were quickly replaced by the Harrier force and it continues in this role to this day. | ||
