| Opened as a training airfield in 1939 it continued in this role until the end of the war when Coastal Command took control of the airfield. Around 1940 three concrete runways had been laid and this helped the Lancasters of Coastal Command settle in. By 1972 the new Nimrod aircraft came into service and it began its long partnership with the airfield which is still going strong today. | ||
