| Opened in 1916 as a airfield for the Royal Flying Corp it was abandoned by 1919. In May 1940 it was reopened as a fighter station to protect the NE of England until handed over to the USAAF in June 1942. It was handed back to the RAF in May 1943 and used as a training unit for fighter command. From 1946 to 1965 various RAF training units were based here until it was handed over to the Army. From 2004 the RAF returned here and still use some of the facilities. | ||
