RAF Stations Index 

Opened in December 1936 it was built for bomber command however by the end of 1939 it had transferred to fighter command. It continued in this role until the the end of the war. During the 1950`s the airfield was expanded to become a `dispersal base` for the V-bomber fleet with other units like the air gunner training school soon to become. The fighter weapons school also moving in. By the 1960`s the base was home to the Lightnings of 19 and 92 Sqn`s. With the Lightnings gone by 1977 the base was transferred to the Army however a flight from 202 Sqn is still based here with Seakings for SAR duties.
