| Opened in 1940 as a bomber airfield it operated in this role until 1945 when it was transferred to the training role. By 1988 it was turned back into a frontline base with Tornado air defence fighters moving in. 25 Sqn is the only fighter unit left on base which is also home to a Sqn of Hawks for Air Combat Training. It continues to be one of three air defence bases in the UK. | ||
