RAF Station
Leuchars |
|
| Aviation was taking place here as early as 1911, however it wasn't until 1916 that airfield facilities were built. Once opened it was a training base for the RFC until 1918 when the airfield was used by the Navy as a trianing base for `naval spotting`. In 1920 it was officially opened as a RAF station. During WW2 the base was used mainly by Coastal Command for anti submarine and coastal strikes. In May 1950 fighter command took control and Meteors from 222 Sqn moved in. It has continued in this role ever since with 43 and 111 Sqns based here today to defend the UK`S airspace. | ||
