RAF Station
Lyneham |
|
| Built around 1939 the airfield was opened as a aircraft storage base and only had a grass landing field which was in the area of the aircraft parking pan on the present base.During 1940 concrete runways were laid and the airbase was used as a maintainance depot and training facility until the end of the war. Lyneham has always been used mainly as a transport airfield however in 1958 it did become for a time a V-bomber `dispersal base` with some `ops` taking place. In 1969 Lyneham received its first Hercules aircraft which it continues to support to the present day. It is due to be closed by 2012 with all aircraft moving to Brize Norton. | ||
