|
| Used as a landing ground from 1915 Marham was first used as a military airfield from 1916 as an air defence base. It was closed and abandoned in 1919. Construction of the modern day airfield started in 1935 as a heavy bomber base for Bomber Command. It was used in this role until after the end of the war. By 1946 the main runway had been completed and from 1950 the Lancasters were replaced by B-50 Washingtons. The first V-bomber arrived in 1954 however by 1965 the role had changed to `Tanking` and P.R rather than bombing. In 1977 construction started on the H.A.S. (hardened aircraft shelters) and the first Tornado Sqn`s arrived in 1982. Today it is a dedicated Tornado base and was until 2006 the last airfield to operate the Canberra PR.9. | ||
