Opened as an RFC station in 1915 it was used in an Air Defence Role against the Zepplin raids during the WW1. Updated between the wars it became an important fighter airfield during the Battle of Britain. It continued in this role until the end of the war. Soon after it was increasingly used by civil aircraft until Heathrow was built and opened. For the most part it has been used by G.A aircraft and RAF V.I.P. flights. From 1995 the RAF`s Queens flight (32 Sqn) have been based here.
