RAF Station
Portreath |
|
| Although flying has occurred here since 1925 it only became established as a permanent airfield in October 1937. Interestingly the airfield was opened by General Erhard Milch who was at the time cheif of staff of the Luftwaffe. The story goes that he was so impressed with the facilities that he wanted to turn the airfield into his headquarters once the invasion of England was complete and didn`t want the airfield bombed. However true this story is, it is a fact that during WW2 Portreath was never once bombed! Operated as a fighter base until 1960 when it reverted to transport command and to became a major helicopter base. It continues in this role to the present day. | ||
