| Made famous as the base that launched the Dambusters raid it was opened in 1916 as a training base for the RFC. By the end of the 1920`s it had been closed down and abandoned however in 1936 it was reopened and transferred to Bomber Command and continued in this role for the rest of the war. For a short time in 1944 it was closed and the runways upgraded. Between 1948 and 1949 it was home to a unit of B-29`s from the USAAF. RAF Canberra`s moved in from 1953 and in 1957 617 Sqn reformed and moved back to Scampton with Vulcan`s. In 1982 the last Vulcan flight at Scampton took place and it was transferred to Support Command. 1983 saw the arrival of the Red Arrows who now use this airfield as its home base. By 2005 the base was transferred back to Strike Command. | ||
