| Opened as a Fighter Command station in February 1941 and used in this role until 1943 when due to little enemy action it was used as a training base and stop over point for aircraft going to and from the US. It has since been used by many training units flying many types of aircraft. It is now home to the Central Flying School for fast jet pilots and is also a Master Diversion Airfield open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A mountain rescue and SAR unit are also based here. | ||
