| Opened in 1916 as a flying training base it was placed under care and maintenance by 1920. Re-opened in 1934 after expansion it was used as a bomber station and home to the the very first Lancaster Sqn. (44 Sqn) After the war it continued its bomber station role until 1953 when closed to prepare for the V-bomber force. It re-opened in 1955 with Canberra`s and by 1957 the first Vulcan units had arrived. The last Vulcan units left by 1984. Today the base operates the E-3 Sentry, Sentinel and Nimrod R1. | ||
