Opened by the RFC as a fighter airfield it was closed by 1920. After four years of closure construction began to update the facilities and the base reopened as a flying training school. In 1938 it became a fighter station once again and continued ops until the end of WW2. Placed into care and maintenance in 1952 the runways were expanded when in 1954 it was reopened as a Bomber Command station. It operated Valiants until 1968 when the bombers were retired and it became the home of the new Harrier force in 1969. It continues in this role today as a OCU (Operational Conversion Unit) for the Joint Harrier Force.
