| Opened as a satellite airfield for RAF Upwood in 1938 the airfield was upgraded with three main runways in 1941 for bomber ops. Come August 1942 it become an US bomber base for the rest of the war and was handed back to the RAF in 1945. On the 1st June 1953 the airfield was reactivated back to the USAF and continued to be a major US base until 31st March 1995 when flying ceased. The domestic section of the airbase is still used by the USAFE. | ||
