Aldermaston |
|
| Built in 1941 it was opened on the 1st July 1942 with three large runways for bomber ops. It was never used in this role as by then it had been handed over to the US as a troop carrier base and opened in October 1943 in this role. It was handed back to the RAF on the 15th June 1945 as a civil flying school for post war pilots. By 1948 the school closed down and a number of companies took over the airfield. However in 1950 the Air Ministry took the airfield back again and opened up the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. By now flying had ceased at Aldermaston. | ||
