This airfield was constructed as a grass field between 1937-39 but upgraded in the winter of 1941-42 with three concrete runways for the heavier bombers coming into service. From 1942 the USAAF took over the airbase and continued bomber ops from here until the end of the war. Of note was the fact that the film `Memphis Belle; A story of a Flying Fortress` was filmed here in 1943 and one Captain Clark Gable was based here as well. The RAF took back control of the airfield in 1945 and continued it`s use until 1969 then it was handed over to the Army.
