Debden |
|
| Opened in 1937 Debden was a purpose built Fighter station and saw much action during the Battle of Britain and was attacked several times by the Germans. In early 1942 all of the `Eagle` squadrons were based here before transferring to the USAAF in late 1942. USAAF fighter ops continued here until October 1944 when 616 Sqn RAF moved in with their Meteor jet fighters. From 1946 to 1960 the airfield was used as a diversion for nearby Duxford with the RAF moving out in 1975 and the Army moving in for use as barracks. | ||
