| Opened as a landing ground for the RAF during the First World War it wasn`t until 1940 that three main runways were built for Bomber Command. However in December 1941 Fighter Command took over and it was then transferred to the USAAF in 1942 and used as a training base by the US until the end of the war. Handed back to the RAF in 1945 it remained a storage depot until sold off in 1953. Although sold off the airfield in very intact and has a `ghost town` feel about it as it looks very much like it did during the war. | ||
