| Construction began in 1942 with USAAF fighter units arriving from September 1943 onwards. Used by the 55th fighter group for ops they moved out in April 1944 and the 398th bomber group moved in. With the war over the base was handed over to the RAF on the 10th July 1945 and used as an ordnance store until placed into care and maintenance in 1954 and finally closed on the 1st March 1959. In the late 1960`s the site was considered for London`s third airport but this was rejected. | ||
