Built in 1940 as a RAF bomber base it was transferred over to the USAAF on the 18th April 1942. The first unit to arrive was the 28th troop carrier sqn in C-47`s but they left in August 1942 to be replaced by various heavy bomber units including the famous 100th bomb group. When the war ended it was handed back to the RAF in July 1945 and used for the storage of millions of world war two sandbags. In 1961 the airfield was sold off and some demolition of the airfield took place, however in 1964 it became a drag racing strip (Santa Pod Raceway) and the main runway is used for this sport.
