Built between 1941 and 1942 the USAAF moved in and used the airfield for heavy bomber ops until May 1945 when it was handed to the RAF and placed into care and maintenance. Although parts of the airfield were sold off in 1952 the main runway was extended in 1955 for possible use by jet aircraft. This was not to be and by 1965 the airfield was sold off. Much of the runway remains intact however the extended section of 1955 has been lifted. It is now used as a gliding club.
