Constructed between 1942 and 1943 the USAAF had earmarked it as a heavy bomber airfield. However it turned out to be surplus to requirements and was used instead by various fighter units the first of which moved in on the 30th November 1943. In September the 3rd scouting force arrived and flew various aircraft from P51`s to B-17`s on classified missions. After V.E. day Wormingford was handed back to the RAF and used by transport command and technical training command until closed and sold off by 1962. A small section of the airfield is retained and used by a gliding school.
